Thrive Virtual Learning 2020-2021

Small Group Literacy Club

Children will be paired with up to 3 other children who are in their same grade and meet 1-2 times per week through the summer (for the weeks you can join).  This option has the benefit of collaboration between a small group of children and helps to maintain reading and writing over the course of the summer. We will spend time in the session on the following activities, depending on the time allotted for the session:

  • In the first session only- reading with each child to assess independent and instructional reading levels, and, giving a spelling assessment to each child

  • Reading a loud quality books and discussing the book (focused on comprehension and vocabulary)

  • Reading a shared text together and focusing on strategies for figuring out words and monitoring understanding of reading (focus on fluency, phonics, and comprehension)

  • Making and sorting words with letter patterns children need to practice, as determined by initial assessments

  • Writing a book on a topic of the child’s choice. Lessons will be done on writing craft, skills, grammar

Cost: $30 per 30 minute session

We will ask during enrollment for you to note your interest in small group tutoring- but cannot guarantee a small group for every child (dependent upon enrollment). You will have the option to note whether you’d ONLY want to do small group, or, whether you’d opt for private tutoring if a small group is not available.

Week- Long Literacy Camps

Just like our in-person camps, children will join a small group of up to 6 children in their same grade, for virtual literacy instruction every day of the week. You can select more than one week to participate. Children will engage in sessions each day that last up to an hour depending on age and stamina.  We will spend time each day:

  • Reading aloud books related to a weekly theme or topic (comprehension and vocabulary instruction)

  • Reading a shared text together and highlighting grade-specific phonics skills and high-frequency words.

  • Making and Sorting Words

  • Writing a book on a topic of our own choosing over the week

Cost: $150 a week for up to hour-long sessions each day

We will run these groups based on interest weekly in June and July.  We will need 3-4 students per age group to run a weekly camp.

Private Literacy Tutoring

Children will receive individualized instruction in reading, writing, and spelling based on their levels and interests. This option is differentiated and tailored to your child’s levels and interests. We will spend time in the session on the following activities, depending on the time allotted for the session:

  • In the first session only- literacy assessments (including interest inventory) will be given to determine levels to inform instruction. As a result of assessments, family will be sent an email detailing tutoring plans. Family will be sent an email at the end of summer detailing progress and instructional recommendations for next school year.

  • Reading aloud quality book and discussing the book (focused on comprehension and vocabulary)

We will increase time in 15 minutes increments over the summer, as children develop more stamina and engagement for the session. For rising Kindergarten students/groups, we will start at 15 minutes the first week, and then will increase from there. Kindergarten and up will start at 30 minutes, with the goal of increasing sessions to one hour. Grades 1-5 we will begin with 30 minute sessions.

All sessions will include movement and brain breaks as needed
